Bakke-yaki "Pottery Workshop at the Date Family's Imperial Kiln" and Tea Ceremony Experience
Bakke-yaki is a pottery produced by the Date family for five generations, which started 300 years ago during the Genroku era (1688-1704), part of the Edo period (1688-1868). Come experience authentic handmade pottery making at Mogasakian teahouse. We hope you will enjoy the fun of ceramics and the world of the tea ceremony.

Did you know that you can find an example of teahouse architecture at "Mogasakian," located behind Dainenji-yama Park in Taihaku Ward, Sendai City? In 1967, a building originally built in the Meiji period and located on Jozenji-dori Avenue was relocated and repurposed as a teahouse in Dainenji-yama Park. Every month we host programs for visitors to experience traditional Japanese culture, Sendai culture, and tea ceremony at the historical "Mogasakian" teahouse!
In the 4th installment of this year’s series, we will hold a “Bakke-yaki” ceramics making workshop & tea ceremony experience at Mogasakian Teahouse.
【Guest Target】Elementary school students and older(※Elementary school students should be accompanied by a guardian.)
【No. of Participants】30 (accepted by order of application)
【Participation Fee】ceramic workshop, lecture, tea drinking 4,600 yen (600 yen included for cost of tea ceremony)
※ For those that want their creations delivered through the mail, the cost is 1,000 yen (price for packaging and shipping).
※It takes about 2 months for the ceramic pottery to be dried and delivered.
【Things to Bring】1 pair of clean socks to change into at the entrance to the teahouse.
※Please wear a face mask while inside the building.
◆We will sit on the tatami mat floor, but we will also have folding chairs available. Please let us know if you need to use one at the event when you apply.

10:00 Session 1 Begins "Ceramics Lecture at Mogasakian"
Instructor: Mr. Kato from Bakke-yaki Genro, Hirogen Studio
Hands-on Workshop: Ceramic Making Experience.
Choose whatever you would like to make, such as mug cups, soup cups, tea bowls, pickle pot, dressing cup, etc.
11:15 Session 1 Finishes / Break Time
11:20 Session 2 Begins “Matcha Experience”
Instructor: Urasenke Tea Master, Ono Sensei
Session 3: “View a tea ceremony which is performed with tables and chairs”
Instructor: Seisuian Urasenke Tea Master, Hatakeyama Sensei
※In order to reduce the risk of spreading COVID-19, the group will be split into two and rotated for the experiences.

Important notes regarding participation | * Considering the health and safety of both the participants and the management staff, we ask that you wear a face mask and cooperate with cough etiquette as part of measures to prevent infection from the new coronavirus. Also, visitors with over a 37.5℃ body temperature should refrain from joining the event. *What to bring: Please prepare "one pair of socks" to change into when you take off your shoes at the entrance. *Folding chairs are available for those who have difficulty sitting in the tatami room, so please let us know when you apply if you need them. |
