Aoba Castle and Honmaru Museum

Opened in 1979. Located on the ruins of Sendai Castle (Aoba Castle Ruins) overlooking the city of Sendai, this is a history museum approved by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology. Exhibits focus on Sendai Castle, city founder and feudal lord Date Masamune, and the Date Clan.

A large theater with a 300-inch screen and 152 seats takes visitors on a tour of the castle and the main castle grounds, visiting all the rooms of the "Ohiroma” Great Hall, a fine example of Momoyama architecture, and showing the moving story of Masamune, Katakura Kojuro, Date Narumi, and Princess Iroha.

The museum also displays actual materials such as documents written by Date Tanemune (14th head of the Date Clan) and Date Harumune (15th head of the Date clan), letters written by Date Masamune himself (17th head of Date Clan, founder of Sendai City), swords, and wedding furnishings (makeup tools, etc.) from the Uwajima Date Clan (based in Ehime Prefecture). At the museum reception, you can rent a “Sendai Castle VR GO!” device to experience virtual reality of historic images at the actual castle ruins sites.
