Fukujusan Jigen-ji Temple

Jigen-ji Temple (Merciful Eye Temple) was built by Ryojyun Shionuma Daiajari, the temple's Head Priest who completed the Omine Sennichi Kaihogyo Ōmine (One-thousand Days Trekking Practice on Mt. Ōmine) in Nara Prefecture where Shugendo Buddhism was born, and the Shimugyō (Four-fold Renouncing Practice), a 9-day aesthetic practice of no drinking, no eating, no sleeping, and no lying down.

From 13:00 on the 3rd Sundays of every month, a strictly practiced prayer stick burning ritual is held inside Jigen-ji Temple’s Gomado (“Homa Hall”) to ask for the blessings of Buddhist deities. *Advance reservations are accepted on the Jigenji website from 10:00 on the 1st of every month.
