Shinjo Tourism Association
Shinjo City is a garden city designed to be in harmony with its rural surroundings. Shinjo was a transportation hub since ancient times. Even today, Shinjo City is full of both nature and sightseeing spots. The city is located in the northeast of Yamagata Prefecture (north of Yamagata City) in the Shinjo Basin. The city is surrounded by mountains such as Kamuro mountain range, often called the “Michinoku Alps" (“Michinoku” is an old name for the Tohoku region).
One must-see event is the "Shinjo Festival," an amazing parade of floats recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. The best way to enjoy the area’s heavy snow is at "Shinjo Shimin Ski Resort" or the "Snow Country Wonderland" where you can experience various snow activities during the winter.
