Ruins of the Great East Japan Earthquake: Sendai Arahama Elementary School, Management Office
Arahama Elementary School is where 320 children, school staff, and local residents evacuated to during the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake. The earthquake triggered a tsunami which reached the 2nd floor of the building. The school building is open to the public as ruins to serve as a memorial and pass on the lessons learned from the disaster.
On the 4th floor of the school building is an exhibition area which displays the situation at the time of the earthquake, the history and culture of the Arahama area, and memories of Arahama Elementary School.
