Without Yanagiu Washi Paper, a traditional craft unique to Sendai, there would be no Tanabata Festival! Learn about the importance and characteristics of Yanagiu then make a lampshade made using the special paper. You’ll be surrounded by Tanabata festival decorations inside the Tanabata Museum, so this will be a magical hands-on and visual experience!
The lampshade is made from a kit, so children and adults can make it without too much difficulty.
Come and experience something you can only do in Sendai!

Reservations accepted at the information desk in the cafe on the 1st floor of the Sasakamakan. Please register 20 minutes before the start time.

Access | -By Car-- About 5 minute drive from Sendai-Tōbu Road, Sendai East IC. OR 20-30 minute drive from JR Sendai Station. --By Public Transportation-- Take the Tozai subway line to “Arai Station.” From there you can walk 25 minutes, or use a bus. Board the bus bound for "Wakabayashi Gymnasium / Tobu Industrial Area" at bus stop No. 16 at the Arai Station bus pool. Alternatively, board the bus bound for "Okada/Arahama" at bus stop No. 18. In either case, depart at “Oroshi-machi Higashi 5 Chome Kita” bus stop. |
