In the past, Watari Town was famous for "sericulture", or silk manufacturing. Some sericulture farmers began by spinning thread from cocoons, then weaving fabric and finally making kimonos. Maybe because of this history, elderly women of the town have the habit of carefully keeping fabric pieces from kimonos and other clothes. The people of Watari have the feeling: “Don’t throw away a piece of fabric big enough to wrap three red beans.” Watalis was inspired by this story, so we started an upcycle project. Kimono left in boxes or chests for many years without being used are remade into cute accessories.

Knowing the hidden meanings of the kimono patterns will help you understand the feelings and hopes of the fabric maker. We'll also learn about kimono fabric materials such as silk and cotton while making a key chain from your favorite pattern!
