Lu Xun stayed in Sendai to study medicine as one of Japan’s first foreign students. The essay "Mr. Fujino," which depicts the memories of the teacher he met at that time, is used as the subject of textbooks in China, and the relationship between Sendai and Lu Xun is well known among Chinese people. Also, Osamu Dazai's "Soubetsu" is a novel that drew on Lu Xun’s advisor "Professor Fujino." Lu Xun would eventually decide to quit medicine, leaving Sendai to focus on literature after a certain event during his studies.
On this tour, we will wander around the Tohoku University Katahira Campus which is associated with Lu Xun, using the above mentioned literary works as references and background information. You can also get a glimpse of Lu Xun's life as an international student from the exhibits in "Tohoku University Archives Lu Xun Memorial Exhibition Room."

Lu Xun, who was studying medicine as a Chinese student among only Japanese students, came to the realization that literature rather than medicine was necessary to save China after viewing a film. Even today, the works of Lu Xun are the subject of textbooks for junior high school students in Japan and China, and are loved by many people. This is a tour that will be exploring how Lu Xun became interested in literature, walking around areas he frequented, and considering the thoughts and actions of his youth.
