Since the Middle Ages, Matsushima has been called the Mt. Koya of northern Japan. Mt. Koya is a sacred mountain in Wakayama Prefecture (central Japan). That location is considered the center of Shingon Buddhism, a sect of Buddhism introduced to Japan by legendary priest Kobo Daishi. On our visit to historical sites and landmarks, we’ll focus on the spiritual locations of Matsushima, where high priests from all over the country visited for training. Let's experience mysterious Matsushima where the famous haiku poet Matsuo Basho once travelled. A local guide will share information not written in guidebooks, along with unique local customs.
