Make this the first thing you do in Sendai!
After we meet inside Sendai Station in front of the famous “Stained Glass” (or your downtown hotel lobby), we’ll go to the 31st floor of the AER Building’s observation deck. This panoramic view will help you understand Sendai’s geographic location between the Pacific Ocean and Ou Mountains.
Next we walk Sendai’s maze of shopping arcades. The mostly covered arcades protect against direct sunlight or rain. The modern fast food, retail, and pachinko chains are easy to see, but I will introduce you to traditional shops, a hidden temple where Sendai’s God of Fortune is enshrined and affordable Sendai street food you can buy on-the-spot.
One of my favorite areas to introduce are Iroha and Bunka Yokocho. “Yokocho” means “alley” or “backstreet” in Japanese. Sendai has several yokocho scattered around the city and these ones have very interesting histories. There are many fun independent shops, bars, and restaurants here. You can get some ideas to explore later on your own!
After going through the shopping arcades again, we finish the walking tour at the city’s symbolic street, Jozenji-dori Avenue. The tall zelkova trees and artistic statues look like a scene from Europe! Here is our final stop, the Mediatheque, a masterpiece of architecture designed by the famous architect Toyo Ito.

I was born and raised in Tohoku and I’ve lived in Sendai more than 30 years. I know about Sendai, Matsushima and other tourist spots in Tohoku such as Yamadera, Hiraizumi, and so on. I have experience guiding various tours including private tours, group tours and inspection tours of tsunami affected areas. I like talking with people. If you visit Tohoku, I’d love to take you to the most interesting and beautiful places. I'm looking forward to seeing you soon.
