The Sendai Domain, created by the city’s founder and first feudal lord Date Masamune, was famous for their high level of martial arts. A samurai warrior had to master many skills, including archery. The Date Clan, headquartered in Sendai, practiced a traditional school of archery called “Heki ryu Insai-ha." The style emphasizes battlefield effectiveness over ceremonial aesthetics. In particular, the shooting method utilized mobility, solo or group tactics, and powerful shots to penetrate armor.
In this archery experience you’ll time travel back to feudal Japan to train like a soldier of the Date Clan! After hearing the history and battle tactics of the day, receive instructions on how to shoot arrows safely inside a modern martial arts center. This experience will be led by Ken Kurosu, a representative of the “Date Insai Archery Research Group,” which also performs at Sendai's Aoba Festival.
