The highlight of autumn in Miyagi Prefecture is without a doubt the green mountain leaves changing to a fiery mix of yellows, oranges, and reds. Countryside drives are great for panoramic views, but hiking into the heart of nature can't be beat. Mt. Kurikoma and Naruko Onsen areas are well-known by foliage fans. During this season, in Miyagi and adjacent Yamagata the local custom of "imonikai" potato parties take over riversides. Around October is also the traditional time sake breweries kickoff the sake making season.
Autumn is the last chance for adventures before the chilly winter, and the perfect time to get out of the city to explore hot springs, mountains, or even a winery while viewing the change of the seasons.
